March in the Lowcountry
Accolades, Real Estate Trends and More. . .
YELP ranked Charleston as the 5th Best City for Economic Opportunity. You may view YELP as simply a place to review a dry cleaner or to rant about the service or product in a local business, but the company says it can use its thirteen year stash of information to decide where to open a business. It’s a novel approach to measuring economic growth, but Harvard Business School says their findings closely match.
The Johns Island Community Association has asked for a six month moratorium on new permits for residential units. 2017 was the busiest year ever for Charleston real estate with almost 18k sales
Real estate inventory continues to be at historically low levels. Low inventory and rising interest rates makes for buyers' urgency. Remember that a 1% increase in mortgage rates reduces a buyers buying power by 10%. Instead of looking for a $300k home, they can only afford a $270k home and keep the same payment. If you’ve thought about selling your home, this year is a golden opportunity.
Lowcountry Businesses in the News
Around town, MUSC has announced its lease of the old JC Penny store in Citadel Mall. In an unconventional move, they will put a medical facility in the space. The first floor will house outpatient surgery, therapy and radiology while the second will be dedicated to doctor’s offices.
